The Security Service of Ukraine’s Military Counterintelligence has detained another agent of russian military intelligence (GRU) in the Dnipropetrovsk Region. The suspect was guiding enemy “Geran-3” jet drones toward defenders in the frontline region. This is stated in a report by the SSU.

According to the case file, a local unemployed man recruited by the enemy was responsible for coordinating the airstrikes. He came to the russians’ attention while searching for “easy money” through his nephew’s Telegram account.

In exchange for promises of “quick side jobs,” the agent was to identify the positions of Ukrainian artillery, specifically HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems, against which the enemy was preparing a drone attack.

The perpetrator also agreed to track the movement routes of Ukrainian military armored vehicles toward the front lines for the russian GRU. To do this, he set up an “observation post” on the roof of his house, from where he used binoculars and a phone camera to monitor the movements of Defense Forces convoys.

He then marked the corresponding coordinates on Google Maps and “reported” to his handler in russia. To maintain secrecy, the agent used his nephew’s phone and a prearranged code. For example, a specific combination of numbers indicated which military facility was being discussed or signaled readiness for an intelligence communication session.

"SSU officers caught the spotter red-handed when he left his property to photograph Ukrainian Armed Forces military equipment from a closer distance. Simultaneously with the detention, the SSU took measures to secure the locations of the Dnipropetrovsk Region defenders within the enemy’s reconnaissance zone, the security service reported.

During searches, two smartphones were seized from the detainee, which he used to collect data and maintain contact with the russian GRU.

Security Service investigators informed the agent that he is suspected of treason committed under martial law (Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The perpetrator faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the Security Service’s military counterintelligence and the State Bureau of Investigations exposed another agent of the aggressor state, the russian federation, within the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He turned out to be an inspector of the State Border Guard Service recruited by the enemy, who coordinated shelling of Ukraine’s northern regions.
