Ukraine has appealed to the UN to immediately cease all military operations near nuclear facilities amid growing security threats. Deputy Foreign Minister Oleksandr Mishchenko has stated this.
During an event dedicated to nuclear safety and the anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster, he emphasized that the war poses unprecedented risks to nuclear infrastructure.
In particular, this refers to the situation surrounding the Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plants, which remain under constant threat.
"All military operations near nuclear facilities must be immediately halted. Any damage to such facilities could undo decades of international efforts in the field of nuclear safety," Mishchenko stated.
He also recalled the incident involving a russian drone strike on the Chornobyl NPP, which damaged the new protective containment structure.
According to the diplomat, the consequences of potential accidents would be global in nature.
"Radiation risks know no borders," he emphasized.
Mishchenko added that it was the Chornobyl experience that served as the basis for the creation of international safety mechanisms, including early warning systems and cooperation with the IAEA.
At the same time, Ukraine stresses that despite pressure from russia, the country will not make concessions.
"The Russian leadership is trying to force Ukraine to capitulate, but that will not happen," the Deputy Minister stated.
As a reminder, russia rejected the US proposal to transfer full control of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant as part of a potential peace agreement.
