Iran offers US new truce plan: they want to postpone nuclear issue

Main points
  • Iran is offering the US a long-term ceasefire or an end to hostilities in exchange for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
  • They propose postponing the issue of Iran’s nuclear program to a later stage of negotiations.
  • President Donald Trump’s team is planning a national security meeting to discuss next steps.

Tehran has presented Washington with an updated initiative aimed at resolving the conflict and the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. At the same time, the Iranian side proposes not to raise the issue of its nuclear program during the initial stage of negotiations.

According to Axios, the proposal was conveyed through intermediaries from Pakistan. It envisions the possibility of a long-term ceasefire or a complete end to hostilities, as well as the reopening of the strait or the lifting of export restrictions.

Key details:

— The parties may agree on either a long-term ceasefire or a final resolution of the conflict.
— The issue of the nuclear program is proposed to be addressed at a later stage — after the situation with the strait is resolved.

The White House confirmed receiving signals from Iran, but has not yet announced a clear position on next steps.

“These are delicate diplomatic negotiations, and the US will not negotiate through the press… The United States will only conclude an agreement if the interests of the American people come first, and Iran never obtains nuclear weapons, said White House spokesperson Olivia Vales.

The negotiation process became more complicated after talks in Islamabad failed to yield results. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s visit to Pakistan ended without a breakthrough, and the planned meeting with US representatives effectively did not take place.

US President Donald Trump explained his delegation’s decision not to travel:

"I don’t see the point in sending them on an 18-hour flight in the current situation… We can do this over the phone."

At the same time, Iranian diplomats have stepped up contacts with other mediators. Araghchi held talks in Oman and also plans to visit moscow to meet with vladimir putin.

According to sources, there is no unified position within the Iranian leadership regarding US demands, particularly regarding halting uranium enrichment and removing stockpiles from the country.

Meanwhile, Washington is preparing to discuss next steps. According to US officials, Trump’s team is planning a national security meeting to consider options in case negotiations drag on.

Trump himself has previously stated that he does not rule out extending the naval blockade of Iran, hoping to thereby increase pressure on Tehran and force it to make concessions.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on April 21, US President Donald Trump stated that he does not want to extend the ceasefire with Iran and threatened to resume attacks if no agreement is reached with Tehran.

On April 17, Trump stated that the naval blockade of Iran would remain in full force until an agreement is reached.
