Ukraine has the potential to become one of the key energy hubs in Europe thanks to its developed gas infrastructure, large underground storage facilities and transit capabilities. This assessment was made by representatives of the US Department of Energy during a meeting with journalists in Kyiv.
This was reported by Ukrinform.
US Energy Department Special Envoy Joshua Volz and Senior Advisor to the US Secretary of Energy Andrew Rapp said that Washington is considering expanding supplies of liquefied natural gas to Ukraine. The US also sees prospects for developing infrastructure for storage, transportation and production of energy carriers in Ukraine.
According to Rapp, the United States is already the largest exporter of liquefied natural gas in the world and plans to double its export volumes by the end of the decade.
He emphasized that Ukraine has the largest gas storage facilities in Europe, which can become an important logistical bridge for Central and Western Europe.
Separately, the American side emphasized that Ukraine is considered not only as a consumer of imported gas, but also as a potential producer. The United States believes that the country has significant natural gas resources of its own for development and increase in production.
Among the promising areas of cooperation, the creation of infrastructure for LNG regasification in Ukraine was also mentioned.
Joshua Volz added that the United States is working on launching the so-called vertical corridor, which will allow transporting energy from the south to the north of Europe, in particular through the territory of Ukraine.
According to him, Washington sees the future of Ukraine as an important center of the European energy transmission and production system.
