US court halts construction of Trump's White House ballroom again

Main points
  • A judge has ruled to halt construction of the ballroom due to lack of congressional approval.
  • The National Trust for Historic Preservation has filed a lawsuit against the White House administration for procedural violations.
  • Donald Trump said the judge was trying to prevent the creation of a safe place for international meetings.

In the US, a federal court has halted the implementation of the White House ballroom construction project initiated by Donald Trump, while allowing work to continue on an underground bunker.

This is reported by the BBC.

Why the court halted construction

The judge noted in his decision that Congressional approval is required for the project to be implemented. He also indicated that the initiative to build the ballroom was filed as being of national security importance, which, he said, is actually being used to circumvent a previous court decision.

Who filed the lawsuit and what are the claims?

The decision was made after a lawsuit by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In the lawsuit, the organization stated that the White House administration violated procedures by failing to submit the project to the National Capital Planning Commission, conduct an environmental assessment, and obtain Congressional approval.

The plaintiffs also cited the provisions of the US Constitution, according to which the power to dispose of federal property and establish rules for its use belongs to Congress.

What was Donald Trump's reaction?

In response, Donald Trump stated that the judge was trying to prevent the creation of a safe place for large international meetings of future presidents and world leaders.

The ballroom project was publicly announced by the White House in July. At the same time, the dismantling of part of the East Wing of the building, where the construction of a complex with an area of more than 8,000 square meters is planned, began.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the White House previously published a visualization of the ballroom project.
