In the near future, the Cabinet of Ministers is to submit to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on the creation of assault troops, which the President announced in September last year. Yesterday, the Ministry of Defense made a statement indicating its support for this initiative and its possible acceleration. This opinion was expressed by military expert Oleksii Kopytko.
"Yesterday, the Ministry of Defense made a statement about the introduction of a new model of warfare - the use of drone assault units. This is read as support for the logic proposed by Chief Syrskyi. Assault troops with a drone component are a given. And if it is a given, it needs to be formalized. President Zelenskyy announced the decision to formalize the assault troops back in September 2025. The current signal from the Defense Ministry may push the process, which has been stalled for a while: the Cabinet of Ministers should submit the relevant draft law to the Verkhovna Rada," said Kopytko.
He noted that skepticism about the creation of a new kind of troops is shattered by the example of the Unmanned Systems Forces, which have successfully proven themselves at the front.
"Let's recall the process of the birth of the Unmanned Systems Forces. There was a lot of skepticism and a lot of manual control. This is not a systemic solution, but a stretching of the normative shell over a successful practice that was born by turnout. But it worked. Now no one can deny the effectiveness of a new kind of forces that have found their niche and are increasing their activity," the expert said.
At the same time, he emphasized that the discussion on the format of assault troops is important, because during the war everything changes rapidly, and combat actions adjust the established approach.
"At present, the Unmanned Systems units in various structures of the Ukrainian Defense Forces are guided by the experience and standards of the Unmanned Systems Forces. At some point, this scales the effect many times over. So, a discussion with elements of synergy based on experience can yield something. War shows what works and what should be the basis, sometimes refuting or adjusting the established approach. In general, we are waiting for the draft law on assault troops, the very fact of which will become a marker, and we are following the direction of the discussion," said Oleksii Kopytko
Earlier it was reported that the Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi initiated the creation of a new kind of forces within the Armed Forces of Ukraine - assault troops as a mobile reserve to stabilize the frontline.
Yesterday, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced the introduction of drone assault units, which combine air and ground drones with infantry into a single system, during a meeting in the Ramstein format.
