President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the words of US Vice President J.D. Vance, who said the day before that peace talks between Ukraine and the aggressor country russia had come down to "bargaining for a few square kilometers."
Vance is not involved in the negotiations, and therefore does not fully understand what is at stake, Zelenskyy said at a briefing, as Novyny.LIVE quoted him as saying.
"The vice president, with all due respect, is not involved in the negotiations. And I think that if he were involved, and other officials, they would probably understand more deeply what a "piece of land" is, what the territory of Ukraine is," Zelenskyy said
He added that the topic of the Donbas in the negotiations is an issue of Ukraine's sovereignty, as these territories are important for the country's defense capabilities. In addition, about 200,000 Ukrainians continue to live there.
Zelenskyy also said that the occupation of the Donbas should not be seen as russia's ultimate goal. For moscow, it is an opportunity to gain a foothold for further offensive actions.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on April 8, US Vice President J.D. Vance, during a visit to Hungary, called the current stage of negotiations between Ukraine and russia a bargaining for territory. He called on the parties to make concessions. He did not specify what concessions russia should make.
Recall that in September 2025, President Zelenskyy said that the withdrawal of the Ukrainian army from the territories of the Donbas would open up free passage for russians to the central part of the country.
