Member of Parliament of Ukraine (the Servant of the People faction) Olha Vasylevska-Smahliuk stated that Ukraine is unlikely to have time to fulfill all the conditions for closing negotiations with the European Union by the end of 2027. According to her calculations, the parliament still has 135 benchmarks to fulfill - about a thousand new laws.
What does the EU require of Ukraine?
Among the key demands are the limitation of the powers of the Prosecutor General's Office, the expansion of NABU's jurisdiction to all high-risk state positions, granting the SAPO the right to initiate criminal proceedings against MPs without the consent of the Prosecutor General.
"I can already see how the MPs are pushing to press the "yes" button," the politician ironically says.
Separately, a comprehensive reform of the State Bureau of Investigation with the participation of international experts is demanded, as well as a ban on closing proceedings due to the expiration of the pre-trial investigation period.
In addition to legislative changes, the EU, according to the MP, demands the implementation of directives on combating money laundering and Ukraine's accession to the Single European Payments Area. Also among the demands are reforms in the field of waste processing, water purification and emission control, which require billions of investments from business.
Olha Vasylevska-Smahliuk is convinced that it is impossible to fulfill the EU requirements by 2027.
"Here we need to either turn on the turbo mode again, or decide on the terms of accession to the EU," Vasylevska-Smahliuk summarized.
As previously reported, in the fall of 2025, the European Commission recognized progress in the process of preparing for Ukraine's accession to the EU, but pointed to "negative trends."
