A fountain is to be installed on the site of the dismantled Lenin monument at the corner of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Khreshchatyk Street in Kyiv. It was reported by the Kyiv City State Administration, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"In the center of Kyiv, it is planned to update the public space at the corner of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Khreshchatyk Street, making it barrier-free and convenient for everyone. The project envisages the arrangement of the territory in accordance with the principles of accessibility and modern standards of the urban environment. It is being implemented with the support and participation of patrons, in particular the Ukrainian pharmaceutical company Farmak," the statement reads.
Valentyn Mondryivskyi, deputy head of the Kyiv City State Administration, noted that after the dismantling of the Lenin monument in 2013, this part of the city remained inaccessible to some pedestrians for many years.
"Today, the square in front of the Bessarabskyi Market is not used as a full-fledged public space. It does not meet the standards of barrier-free accessibility, as it is possible to cross the road here only through an underground passage that is inaccessible to people in wheelchairs, parents with baby strollers, and many others. Therefore, the city plans to implement the project of a new space, taking into account the accessibility requirements, current standards and location features," he said.
It is noted that the square is planned to be equipped with landscaping, benches, lighting, comfortable paths and a fountain, which will become the symbolic center of the new space.

The KCSA notes that fountains have a special place in the architectural tradition of Kyiv: more than 100 years ago, the famous cast-iron Termen Fountains were installed in city parks, and over time they became an integral part of the capital's historical environment. In the recent history of the city, a similar fountain appeared, in particular, on Saint Volodymyr Hill, and the same element of improvement is envisaged for this part of the square.

The KCSA's permanent competition commission for attracting investors supported the attraction of extra-budgetary funds for the implementation of the works, which is enshrined in the relevant order. Currently, the Kyivavtodor municipal corporation has started procurement procedures through the Prozorro electronic system.
The project is planned to be completed next year.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on December 8, 2013, protesters demolished the Lenin monument on Shevchenko Boulevard in Kyiv.
In November 2024, the Kyiv City Council decided to dismantle the pedestal from the Lenin monument on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard.
