The Cabinet of Ministers has granted the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People the status of a representative body. This is stated in the order No. 303 of April 3, Ukrainian News Agency reports.
"To grant the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People the legal status of a representative body of the Crimean Tatar People," the document states.
The Cabinet of Ministers also instructed the executive authorities to adopt acts and decisions on the development of the Crimean Tatar language, culture, ensuring the rights of the Crimean Tatar people to education in the Crimean Tatar language, the activities of the media in the Crimean Tatar language, the integration of the Crimean Tatar people and other issues specified by the Law "On Indigenous Peoples of Ukraine", after consultations with the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Rustem Umerov noted in the Telegram channel that this decision formalizes the role of the Mejlis at the level of state policy and ensures its participation in making decisions related to the rights, culture, education and development of the Crimean Tatar People.
"From now on, decisions of executive bodies on these issues must be made taking into account the position of the Mejlis. This creates a clear mechanism for interaction of the state with the representative body of the indigenous people. This is also an important signal about Ukraine's consistent position on the issue of Crimea, the rights of indigenous peoples and the future de-occupation," Umerov noted.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on April 2, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to ensure that the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People is granted the legal status of a representative body in order to help ensure the exercise of the right to sustainable development of the Crimean Tatar People, guarantees of its ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious identity.
The President's Office explained that the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People was founded in 1991 and is the only supreme representative and executive body of this people, however, all this time it did not have the appropriate legal status. After resolving this legal issue, the Mejlis will, in particular, be able to participate in the development of state programs and fully represent the interests of the Crimean Tatar People.
