Ukrainian police officers extradited a former English teacher to Azerbaijan, where he faces up to 15 years in prison.
This was reported by the press service of the National Police of Ukraine.
"A 45-year-old native of the city of Adjikabul (Azerbaijan) signed a contract with the russian armed forces for a period of two years in October 2023. He was enlisted in the unit of the so-called "DPR" of the 1st Slovyansk Brigade, where he was an assistant grenade launcher in an assault company and fought in the Donetsk Region. The suspect used the call signs "Lev" and "Rafik" and directly participated in hostilities against Ukrainian forces. At the same time, he had no previous military experience, because he was a teacher by education, worked as an English teacher, as well as a translator and guide," the report says.
The servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine took the suspect prisoner on June 21, 2024 near Ocheretyne. After that, he was in the Lviv pre-trial detention center.
At the request of the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan, investigators of the Main Investigation Directorate of the National Police conducted the necessary procedural actions and confirmed his participation in illegal armed formations.
According to the State Security Service of Azerbaijan, the man was served with suspicion under Articles 12.1 and 279.1 of the Criminal Code of this state - creation and participation in illegal armed formations, their financing and provision. The sanctions of the articles provide for a penalty of imprisonment for a term of up to 15 years.
The Azerbaijani side guaranteed compliance with his rights in accordance with the norms of international humanitarian law, in particular the Geneva Conventions and the European Convention on Human Rights.
