US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that after the military operation in Iran is over, the United States "will have to" review its relationship with NATO.
He said this in an interview with Fox News.
"If we now get to the point where NATO membership means that, in essence, we can no longer use these bases to protect American interests, then NATO is a one-way street; then NATO is simply that we keep troops in Europe to protect Europe, but when we need their help... No, not their help - we don't ask them to carry out air strikes. When we need them to let us use their military bases, their answer is "no"? Then why are we in NATO?" Rubio said.
Rubio wondered why "trillions of dollars" were invested, and American troops stationed in the region, if in time of need - the bases will not be allowed to be used.
"So I think that, unfortunately, there is no doubt: after this conflict is over, we will have to reconsider this relationship. We will have to reconsider the value of NATO and this Alliance for our country. Ultimately, this decision must be made by the President, and he must do it," Rubio said.
According to the US Secretary of State, the American authorities will have to reconsider whether the Alliance is still fulfilling its purpose or has turned into a "one-way street" where, according to him, America only protects Europe.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, US President Donald Trump will address the nation regarding the military operation in Iran on April 2, Kyiv time. He is to announce "important news."
Recall that the day before, Trump made a sharp statement to the allies who refused to participate in the forceful resolution of the Iranian issue, warning that Washington would stop supporting the unblocking of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump also criticized France for refusing to allow aircraft to fly over the area during the operation against Iran.
