The volume of natural gas imports to Ukraine fell sharply at the beginning of April - to 0.8 million cubic meters per day, the lowest value since January 2025.

This is announced by the ExPro publication, Ukrainian News Agency reports.

The report states that compared to the previous day, gas imports fell by more than 30 times - from 24 million cubic meters on March 31 to 0.8 million cubic meters on April 1.

The sharp reduction in gas imports since April was expected, it is associated with high natural gas prices in Europe, which remained at a higher level than in Ukraine throughout March.

On average, gas in Europe (TTF) in March was traded by EUR 9/MWh more expensive than on the Ukrainian market.

European natural gas prices increased in early March after the start of the war in the Middle East.

Given that the war is ongoing and LNG supplies from Qatar and the UAE through the Strait of Hormuz are blocked, gas prices in Europe remain high, and therefore, in such conditions, importing gas to Ukraine is expensive.

But Ukraine can afford not to import gas in April, given that gas reserves in storage are higher than last year.

Ukraine completed this year's gas withdrawal season from storage on March 10, and the withdrawal season was one of the shortest in Ukrainian history.

Gas reserves in storage amounted to 9.5 billion cubic meters, 1.6 times more than last year.

A small import of gas to Ukraine is stored at the beginning of April - 0.8 million cubic meters from Poland.

The gas is being pumped into the "bonded warehouse" of Ukrainian underground storage facilities.

It is noted that there are no imports from other directions.

It is expected that gas import volumes will remain low during April.

Ukraine has a goal to accumulate at least 13 billion cubic meters of gas in underground storage facilities by November 1, 2026, which can be achieved even without imports.

However, to better prepare for winter, Ukraine needs to import certain volumes of natural gas - about 0.5 billion cubic meters by November 1.

Gas imports are likely to increase at favorable prices at European hubs.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in 2025, gas imports to Ukraine increased 9 times compared to 2024 to 6.5 billion cubic meters (2024 - 724 million cubic meters).
