Co-founder of Nova Poshta Volodymyr Popereshniuk said that the introduction of a tax on international parcels worth up to EUR 150 will hit the entire Ukrainian economy - including those manufacturers and retailers that this law is supposedly designed to protect. He wrote about this on Facebook.
Why will the tax on parcels hit Ukrainian business?
According to Popereshniuk, the logic of the bill is flawed - the authors mistakenly view the economy as a zero-sum game, where the win of importers automatically means the loss of Ukrainian producers. The entrepreneur emphasizes the feedback loop: the pressure on small players and individuals is painfully hitting all industries.
"The increase in the price of purchases abroad will leave our people with less money to buy from Ukrainian manufacturers and our retail," he noted.
Popereshniuk is convinced that the hope for a mass transition of consumers to Ukrainian stores is an illusion. According to him, people buy on import platforms not instead of Ukrainian goods, but in addition to them - because there are products there that simply do not exist in Ukraine.
"Ukraine makes up only 0.2% of the world's population, and we will never be able to replace the entire range of unique and cheap goods produced around the world," the entrepreneur emphasized.
As previously reported, the day before, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved bills on tax changes, which, among other things, propose to introduce taxation of international parcels starting from EUR 0 (currently, parcels up to EUR 150 are not taxed).
