Ukraine will develop its own nuclear fuel production. The Energoatom National Nuclear Energy Generating Company joint-stock company has announced this on its Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has made a strategic decision that opens a new page in the history of the national nuclear power industry. We are talking about the construction of a modern technological complex for the production of fuel assemblies for Ukrainian NPPs on the territory of the South Ukrainian city territorial community," the statement said.
It is noted that the construction of the complex is an important step towards Ukraine's energy independence, as the transition to its own fuel using Westinghouse technology will help improve the safety of the fuel component of Ukrainian NPPs.
Earlier, the American company assessed and potentially qualified Energoatom's production lines for the possibility of assembling fuel assemblies. In addition, an environmental impact analysis was conducted and a feasibility study was developed. The documentation has successfully passed the state examination, confirming the feasibility and safety of the project.
Energoatom notes that the initiative has received the support of the local community - in September 2025, the project was approved at the local level. And now, in March 2026, the government made the final decision, launching its practical implementation.
The next stage will be the development of project documentation and a comprehensive state examination.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in March 2024, Energoatom announced that nuclear fuel from the American company Westinghouse would be loaded into the reactors of the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant (KhNPP, Netishyn, Khmelnytskyi Region), so from now on, all domestic nuclear power plants will use American fuel assemblies.
