The United States has increased the number of its troops in the Middle East to more than 50,000 amid the escalating situation around Iran. At the same time, even such a contingent, according to experts, is insufficient to conduct a large-scale ground operation or to hold a large country.
It was reported by The New York Times with reference to representatives of the US military.
According to the newspaper, about 40,000 US troops were previously deployed in the region, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE and Kuwait. However, amid the escalation of the conflict with Iran, this number has increased by more than 10,000.
Last week, the Pentagon also deployed about 2,000 troops from the 82nd Airborne Division to the region, who could be involved in various operations, including near Iran. The exact location of their deployment has not been disclosed.
Despite the increased military presence, analysts emphasize that even a 50,000-strong contingent does not allow the United States to conduct a full-scale ground operation or control the territory of a large state.
Recall that the United States is considering the option of capturing key Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.
