US President Donald Trump has told his aides that he wants to avoid a "forever war" with Iran and find a way out of it through negotiations.

Reuters reports this with reference to a senior White House official, who said that Trump urged his advisers to stick to his publicly stated plan, according to which the operation would last four to six weeks.

The official noted that such a timetable looks "shaky."
