The European Union is preparing for a large-scale strengthening of security protocols due to a critical increase in the risks of leaks of classified information to the russian federation. This is reported by Politico.
European diplomats and senior officials insist on the introduction of strict control measures after a series of high-profile incidents that have jeopardized the internal unity of the bloc. In particular, serious concern is caused by the activities of the Hungarian government, which for years could have transferred confidential data about closed discussions in the EU to the Kremlin, as well as suspicions of cooperation between representatives of German far-right forces with Moscow. The situation was exacerbated by the case of the interception of a telephone conversation of one of the EU officials, which confirmed the vulnerability of existing communication channels.
The new security strategy provides for a significant expansion of the list of documents that will be classified as "secret", which will automatically trigger an official investigation and strict sanctions in the event of any leak. Working with such files will be possible only in specially protected reading rooms, and access to them for parliamentarians of individual member states will be significantly limited. In addition, Brussels is introducing radical restrictions on the use of electronic devices and popular foreign messengers for official purposes. Some states have already begun the transition to national digital platforms, and by the end of this year the EU plans to launch its own secure systems for the exchange of even unclassified, but sensitive information.
The upcoming elections in Hungary, scheduled for April 12, add particular urgency to these measures. Diplomatic circles suggest that in the event of Viktor Orbán's re-election, the European Union may accelerate the implementation of new security rules as much as possible in order to minimize Budapest's influence on the circulation of strategically important information. Such steps are aimed at creating a reliable digital and physical barrier against external espionage and internal disinformation, ensuring the confidentiality of the bloc's strategic decisions.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, the former head of the European Commission believes that Hungary should be excluded from closed EU meetings for passing information to russia.
