Canada imposes new sanctions on Iran over arms transfers to russia

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced that Canada is imposing additional sanctions on five individuals and four entities in Iran for transferring weapons to the IRGC, as well as to russia for use in the war in Ukraine.

This was stated on the Canadian government's website.

It is indicated that the new sanctions are aimed at Iranian businessmen and companies that are directly involved in procurement networks that produce and supply advanced technologies to support the production and transfer of weapons by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

"The transfer by the Islamic Republic of Iran of weapons, drones and technology to malicious actors, such as Iranian and russian proxy networks, for use in the war of aggression against Ukraine fuels armed conflict, threatens the sovereignty of other states and violates international norms," the message said.

The government called the sanctions a signal that Canada will impose sanctions on those who support Iran's destabilizing actions and will not tolerate actions that undermine regional and international peace and security. The country stressed that it will continue to take concrete measures to counter Iran's actions and "support the Iranian people in their pursuit of freedom, dignity and respect for human rights."

Canada has already imposed sanctions on 227 Iranian individuals and 260 Iranian organizations, and has designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, along with the Houthis, Hamas and Hezbollah.

The country has also designated Iran as a foreign state sponsor of terrorism, a decision the Canadian government confirmed in December 2025. In addition, back in 2022, the country recognized the leadership of the Iranian government as not having the right to enter Canada due to their involvement in terrorism and systematic and gross violations of human rights.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, The New York Times noted that Canada is negotiating with the EU to participate in a defense initiative that would allow it to produce European military equipment at its own enterprises. The EU seeks to strengthen industry and reduce dependence on the US, and this opens up a new market for Canada.

Meanwhile, earlier, the head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian parliament, Ebrahim Azizi, stated that Ukraine, through assistance with drones, has turned its territory into a legitimate target for Iran.

In addition, russia plans to complete the transfer of drones, medicines and food to Iran by the end of March, the Financial Times reported, citing Western intelligence and officials.
