Russian foreign intelligence has developed a plan to stage an assassination attempt on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

It was reported by the portal of the American edition of The Washington Post.

Last month, a division of the russian Foreign Intelligence Service became concerned about the sharp drop in Orbán's rating. According to the newspaper, in an internal report, the operatives outlined a strategy that should "fundamentally alter the entire paradigm of the election campaign."

The idea was to organize a showy "attack" on the current Hungarian prime minister.

"Such an incident will shift the perception ofthe campaign out of the rational realm of socioeconomic questions into an emotional one, where the key themes will become state security and the stability and defense of the political system," the document says.

There have been no real attacks on Orbán. The prime minister's spokesman Zoltán Kovács did not respond to a request from journalists.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the reports "disinformation."
