On Friday, Iran attempted to strike a joint US-UK military base on the Indian Ocean island of Diego Garcia.
According to The Wall Street Journal, two ballistic missiles were fired, but neither reached their target.
One missile malfunctioned in flight, while the other was intercepted by a US warship using an SM-3 interceptor missile.
This attack was the furthest since the beginning of the conflict - the distance to Diego Garcia is about 4,000 kilometers, while Iran previously stated that it limited the range of its missiles to 2,000 km.
Against the background of the attack, the office of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced an urgent meeting. They discussed, in particular, Iran's actions in the region, including a possible blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Downing Street also confirmed that the agreement on the use of British bases provides for US defensive operations aimed at reducing Iran's ability to carry out attacks in the region.
At the same time, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Iran was acting within the right to self-defense and criticized the UK's position, accusing the government of dragging the country into the conflict.
