The US Department of the Treasury, in an effort to curb rising energy prices, has issued a license to sell Iranian oil already on tankers at sea.
This was announced by the Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent on the social network X and was confirmed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Department of the Treasury.
"Today, the Department of the Treasury is issuing a highly specialized short-term permit that allows the sale of Iranian oil currently stuck at sea," the US official said.
He explained that such actions will allow 140 million barrels of oil to be quickly delivered to world markets, thus easing the temporary pressure on oil supplies caused by Iran.
"Essentially, we will use Iranian barrels against Tehran to keep the price low while continuing Operation Epic Fury," the official said.
Bessent stressed that such a temporary short-term permit is limited solely to oil that is already in transit and does not allow new purchases or production.
The document, published by the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Department of the Treasury, states that it is a permit for a month to sell Iranian oil loaded onto tankers until March 20. The permit for operations to sell, supply and unload Iranian oil and petroleum products will be valid for a month - until April 19.
Earlier, the Ukrainian News Agency reported that in the coming days the US may lift sanctions on Iranian oil already loaded onto tankers at sea in order to curb the global rise in prices for petroleum products.
