President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed condolences to all Orthodox Christians over the death of Patriarch Filaret. Zelenskyy said this in a statement on his Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
"I spoke with Metropolitan Epiphanius. My condolences to him and all Orthodox Christians - the earthly journey of Patriarch Filaret is over. It is a great loss for Ukrainians. He was a strong personality and one of the strongest defenders of the Ukrainian church, independence and statehood. The Ukrainian people will always honor his contribution to the development of the local church. And without Patriarch Filaret's energy, character and courage, many of Ukraine's achievements would not have happened," he said.
Zelenskyy urged to remember how Patriarch Filaret taught to unite around the idea of a strong, independent Ukraine.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on Friday, March 20, Patriarch Filaret Filaret (in the world Mykhailo Antonovych Denysenko) died at the age of 98.
Primate of the OCU Epiphanius stressed that thanks to Filaret, the organizational creation of a single local Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the receipt of the Tomos of autocephaly became possible.
