US President Donald Trump has rejected vladimir putin's offer to export Iranian enriched uranium to russia, made during a phone call on March 9.
Axios reports this, citing a knowledgeable source.
According to the publication, putin proposed several ideas for resolving the conflict between Washington and Tehran, including the transfer of uranium to moscow, but the American side did not accept this option.
"This was not the first time this proposal was made. It was not accepted. The US position is that we need to ensure the safety of uranium," the US official explained.
It was about 450 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%. As the publication recalls, such material, with further processing, can be brought to the level of weapons within a few weeks, and its volume is potentially enough to create more than ten nuclear warheads.
According to Axios, moscow raised this topic back in May 2025 during the US-Iranian nuclear talks, as well as a few weeks before the current war began. In the last round of negotiations before the escalation, Tehran rejected the idea of exporting uranium and proposed to dilute it at its facilities under the control of the IAEA.
It remains unclear whether the Iranian side is now ready to accept the option of exporting uranium, the newspaper writes.
The Pentagon, commenting on the situation, made it clear that various scenarios are being considered. The head of the department, Pete Hegseth, said at a press conference that the United States "has a number of options" to establish control over highly enriched uranium.
Washington would welcome a voluntary transfer of stockpiles by Iran, but, according to Hegseth, Tehran was not ready for this during previous contacts.
