Shmyhal announces electricity shortage of about 1 GW during peak hours

The power shortage in the Ukrainian power system during peak loads currently reaches about 1 GW, which forces the application of restrictions within 1.5 queues in the most problematic regions. This was stated by Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada.

"Currently, the power shortage in the Ukrainian power system during peak consumption hours is about 1 GW," the government official emphasized.

Maintaining the stability of the network is helped by electricity imports from the EU, which provide 12% of daily consumption, in parallel with the active restoration of generation after russian attacks.

"Imports continue and account for about 12% of total consumption during the day, thanks to which we are better able to maintain the situation during peak load hours," the government official emphasized.

According to the minister, in addition to repairing large CHPPs, the priority is to develop distributed generation, which has already added 1.5 GW to the power system since the start of the full-scale war. Shmyhal emphasized that the ambitious goal for 2026 is to launch another 1.5 GW of such capacity thanks to preferential lending programs for businesses and citizens.

As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, in February, compared to January, Ukraine increased electricity imports by 41% to record electricity import volumes - 1.26 million MWh.

It was also reported that electricity prices for the population will remain at the level of UAH 4.32 per kWh from March 1, 2026, and a tariff increase in the spring is not planned.
