Iranian drones attack French and Kurdish forces base in Iraq: French soldier killed

On March 12, Iran launched a drone strike on a joint French and Kurdish base in the city of Makhmur in Iraq. The attack killed Senior Adjutant Arnaud Frion and wounded at least five other soldiers.

This was reported by Erbil Governor Omed Koshnau, a Reuters source in the security service and French President Emmanuel Macron.

According to them, at least six soldiers were injured in the attack. One of the wounded - Senior Adjutant Arnaud Frion - later died.

Macron said that the forces that have been participating in the fight against the Islamic State group since 2015 were hit.

"The war in Iran cannot justify such attacks," the French President said, calling the attack unacceptable.

What is known about the war in Iran

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran. During these attacks, the country's supreme leader Ali Khamenei and a significant part of the military leadership - about 40 senior officials - were killed. On March 8, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was elected the new supreme leader.

After that, Iran began retaliatory strikes: missiles and drones are being directed at Israel and at American military bases in the Persian Gulf countries - in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. Some of the munitions hit the infrastructure and residential areas of these states.

The United States said that it did not plan to stop the operations. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said during a briefing that the actions would continue according to the American plan until the enemy was defeated.

Meanwhile, the new Iranian leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, threatened to strike at American bases in the Middle East and demanded their closure.

The conflict has already had an impact on the global economy. The tensions have brought tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a route through which about a fifth of the world's oil exports pass, to a near standstill, sending oil prices above USD 100 a barrel.
