The Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) counterintelligence has detained a citizen of the aggressor country russia, who worked for the russian military intelligence (GRU). The offender was tracking the locations of the Defense Forces, where the enemy was preparing missile and drone attacks. This is said in the SSU report.
The investigation showed that the russian had a permanent residence permit in Ukraine and was spying under the guise of a welder in a private company in the Dnipropetrovsk Region.
During business trips to different regions of Ukraine, the offender tracked the coordinates of Ukrainian troops. Among the main objects of his "interest" were air defense units, checkpoints and airfields of the Defense Forces in the Dnipropetrovsk Region and in the west of Ukraine.
In case of detection of military facilities, the informant marked their location on Google maps to generate a "report" for the russian GRU.
The SSU documented how, while in western Ukraine, the offender tried to identify local airfields with combat aircraft of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
"The SSU CI kept this Russian 'in sight' from the very beginning of his espionage activity. Thus, it was possible not only to document his crimes, but also to secure all locations of the Defense Forces, which were scouted by the suspect. The informant was detained at his place of residence in Kirovohrad Region," the SSU said.
According to the case file, the russian was recruited by the russian GRU through his old acquaintance who cooperates with russians in the temporarily occupied territory of the Zaporizhzhia Region.
During the searches, a smartphone with evidence of his cooperation with the enemy was seized from the detainee.
Currently, investigators of the Security Service have informed the detainee of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized dissemination of information about the movement or deployment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or other military formations formed in accordance with the laws of Ukraine, committed under martial law)
The perpetrator is in custody. He faces up to 12 years in prison.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the SSU detained a russian agent "red-handed" who was preparing a terrorist attack in the center of Rivne.
