US President Donald Trump said that he would demand the immediate removal of mines from the Strait of Hormuz if the information about their installation by Iran is confirmed. He warned Iran of "unprecedented military consequences" if the mining is confirmed.
The US President wrote about this on the Truth Social social network.
According to Trump, there is currently no confirmation of the installation of mines. At the same time, he said that if this information is confirmed, he demands that they be "removed immediately."
"If for any reason the mines were installed and are not removed immediately, the military consequences for Iran will be unprecedented," Trump wrote.
The US President also noted that the removal of the mines, if they were installed, would be a "huge step in the right direction."
What is known about mines in the Strait of Hormuz
Earlier, CNN, citing sources familiar with the reports of American intelligence agencies, reported that Iran has begun laying mines in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the channel's interlocutors, the mining is not yet large-scale.
The same sources noted that Iran retains 80% to 90% of its small vessels and has the ability to lay "hundreds" of mines in the strait.
Why is the Strait of Hormuz important to the global oil market
The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global oil exports. It connects the Persian Gulf countries — including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and the UAE — with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
It is estimated that about 20% of the world's oil consumption is transported through the Strait of Hormuz daily.
After the US and Israeli strikes began, Iran announced the closure of the strait and warned that it would destroy any ship that tried to pass through it.
As a reminder, due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and restrictions on air travel, shipments of rice, meat and coffee did not reach the United Arab Emirates, although supermarket shelves remain full.
