The first week of the military operation against Iran cost the United States USD 6 billion. The administration of President Donald Trump is expected to appeal to the US Congress for additional funding.

This is discussed in the material of the American edition of The New York Times(NYT).

The newspaper writes that the day before, representatives of the US Department of War told Congress that the war against Iran has already cost the country's budget USD 6 billion. US officials claim that the Iranian air defense system has been largely destroyed, so the US Army can continue the campaign of strikes against Iran for several weeks with minimal risk to its pilots.

Since the start of the operation, the number of US forces in the Middle East has increased to more than 50,000, including two aircraft carriers and more than a dozen warships, as well as dozens of additional bombers and attack aircraft that continue to arrive in the region. Approximately USD 4 billion of the US spending on the war with Iran in the first week was spent on munitions, mainly missiles for air defense systems.

The head of the US Central Command, Admiral Brad Cooper, said last Thursday, March 5, that due to US and Israeli strikes, Iran reduced the number of ballistic missile launches by 90% compared to the first day of the operation. In addition, the number of drone launches decreased by 83% compared to the first day of the conflict.

Despite this, Iran continues to possess a significant arsenal of both types of weapons. At closed-door briefings to Congress, estimates were presented that about 50% of Iran's missile program is still operational. The US and Israeli militaries claim that they are reducing Iran's remaining capabilities every day.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on March 6, US President Donald Trump said that Washington does not intend to conduct any negotiations with Tehran, except for unconditional surrender.

According to NBC News, Trump in private conversations expressed "serious interest" in conducting a ground operation against Iran.
