NATO does not rule out use of Article 5 in event of threat from Iran - Rutte

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that there is broad support in the Alliance for US actions aimed at deterring Iran's nuclear and missile potential. He said this in an interview with Newsmax.

At the same time, Rutte emphasized that the Alliance itself does not take a direct part in operations against Tehran. According to him, NATO is not formally involved in the campaign, but the allies support Washington's steps and contribute to US efforts in the region.

The Secretary General noted that European countries share concerns about Iran's actions, in particular due to security threats and the activity of Iranian structures in Europe. He emphasized that the Alliance guarantees the protection of its entire territory.

Separately, Rutte commented on the possibility of using Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty on Collective Defense. According to him, NATO traditionally remains uncertain about the conditions for its activation, but if the mechanism is used, the allies will notify about it immediately.

The head of the Alliance also reported on constant consultations with partners in the Middle East - in particular, with the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait - and assured of readiness to contribute to their security amid the escalation in the region.

As a reminder, the US fears a rapid depletion of modern missile stocks due to the operation in Iran.
