Some units of the Kurdistan Freedom Party have moved to areas near the Iranian border in Sulaymaniyah province and are on alert for a possible cross-border operation. According to some sources, the offensive has already begun.
This was reported by the Associated Press.
Units of the organization, based in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq, allegedly received assurances from the United States of support for potential actions on Iranian territory. American officials have contacted leaders of Kurdish opposition groups about a possible operation, without specifying details.
Three Iraqi Kurdish officials told the agency that on March 2, a telephone conversation took place between US President Donald Trump and the leaders of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan - Masoud Barzani and Bafel Talabani. During the call, the parties discussed the situation in Iran.
CNN and Axios previously reported on the same conversation, noting that the US Central Intelligence Agency is allegedly working on arming Kurdish forces to foment an uprising in Iran.
Are there any reports of the start of the Kurdish offensive on Iran
The Israeli publication i24NEWS, citing a representative of the Coalition of Political Forces of Iranian Kurdistan, reported that Kurdish formations have already launched an offensive. According to this information, fighters affiliated with the Kurdistan Free Life Party took up combat positions on the territory of Iran on Monday, March 2.
Who are the Kurds
The Kurds are a people numbering about 40 million people living in Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria. Iraqi Kurdistan has the status of broad autonomy within federal Iraq, while in Iran there is a province of Kurdistan without an autonomous government.
As a reminder, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that they had dropped 5,000 bombs on Iran since the start of the current war.
On March 3, Trump said that the United States has virtually unlimited weapons reserves and is capable of conducting combat operations for a long time, relying only on existing resources.
On March 4, it became known that 101 people were missing after a submarine attack on an Iranian ship near the coast of Sri Lanka. The Iranian frigate was probably hit by a US submarine.
