Iran and its proxies may target the United States as a response to the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei by Israeli and US strikes. Reuters reported this on Tuesday, March 3, citing a US intelligence assessment.

The Department of Homeland Security's Office of Intelligence and Analysis has assessed the threat of targeted attacks on the United States by Iran and its allies. The report says that Iran and its proxies "likely" pose a threat of targeted attacks against the United States, although a large-scale physical attack is called "unlikely."

"Although a large-scale physical attack is unlikely, Iran and its proxies probably pose a persistent threat of targeted attacks in the Homeland, and will almost certainly escalate retaliatory actions — or calls to action - if reports of the Ayatollah's death are confirmed," the DHS report reviewed by Reuters said.

The report added that in the short term the main concern was that Iran-aligned "hacktivists" would conduct low-level cyber attacks against U.S. networks, such as website defacements and distributed denial-of-service attacks.

The DHS assessment also says that Iran is likely to continue attacks on US and allied targets in the Middle East and will "almost certainly" blame senior US government officials for any protests that begin in Iran.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on March 3, the Saudi Ministry of Defense confirmed that the US Embassy in Riyadh was attacked by two drones that caused a fire.

On March 2, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked the Athe Nova tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. It became the fifth vessel to be attacked by Iranian forces in the last three days.

On March 3, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said that Iran would consider an act of war against its country the entry of European states into the conflict with Israel and the United States.
