During the strikes on Iran on February 28, the United States and Israel deployed 200 fighter jets that hit about 500 targets across the country.
The Wall Street Journal reported this, citing sources in the US and Israeli intelligence agencies.
The preparation of the operation lasted several months. The targets, in particular, were to be meetings between Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other officials. Israeli representatives said they recorded three such meetings, but the Ayatollah was present at only one of them.
Thirty bombs were dropped on Khamenei's residence, destroying the building. According to the Israeli side, the Ayatollah's chief security adviser Ali Shamkhani, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Mohammad Pakpour and Defense Minister Amir Nasirzadeh were killed in the operation.
The newspaper's interlocutors noted that the military struck during the day, although they had previously expected a night attack, similar to the operation in the summer of 2025. Former Israeli military intelligence chief Amos Yadlin said that the daytime strike was a tactical surprise.
