US First Lady Melania Trump will chair a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on March 2. This is the first time in the history of the organization that a First Lady will chair, and not a country's ambassador to the UN or a high-ranking government official.

Thus, the meeting, entitled "Children, Technology and Education in Conflict", will be chaired by the First Lady of the incumbent US President. It will consist of 15 members, and will open the first meeting under the chairmanship of the US - from March 2026, the US will take over the monthly rotating presidency of the UN Security Council.
According to the statement, Melania Trump plans to draw attention to education as a tool for fostering tolerance and promoting global peace.
"Ms. Trump's leadership will mark the first time an incumbent First Lady has chaired the Security Council, as members address issues of education, technology, peace and security," the White House said.
"We are thrilled to have First Lady gavel in the US Presidency of the Security Council," Walz wrote on X.
Security Council meetings are typically chaired by a country's ambassador to the UN or a senior government official. While former First Ladies, such as Eleanor Roosevelt, have held influential positions at the UN - Roosevelt helped draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - none have chaired a Council meeting while serving as First Lady.
But the move comes amid Donald Trump's increasingly hostile stance toward the UN. He has often called the organization "ineffective" and called for radical change, and has pulled the United States out of several UN-related agencies, including the World Health Organization and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, a fundamental international agreement to combat the climate crisis.
In addition, the Trump administration has cut funding for UN units working with Palestinian refugees, calling it a "hopelessly flawed operation." Last week, Trump held the first meeting of his "peace council," which many see as the President's attempt to create an alternative to the UN.
