Ukraine is rapidly losing ground on the global walnut market, with exports decreasing by 90% to USD 9.2 million in 2025.
The president of the Ukrainian Walnut Association, Hennadii Yudin, has announced this on his Facebook page, the Ukrainian News agency reports.
The report says that over the past two decades, Ukraine has been ranked third in walnut exports after the United States and Chin.
However, in the last decade, walnut exports from Chile, thanks to strong government support, took the third place, and Ukraine took a stable fourth place in the world walnut ranking.
"Although Ukrainian walnuts have virtually no branded varieties such as Chandler, they are valued for their rich, high-quality taste, which is due to their cultivation on fertile Ukrainian black soil, for their fairly simple logistics to the EU, low price and high quality of processing," Yudin wrote.
According to the State Statistics Service, over the previous five years (2020-2024), Ukraine exported more than 160,000 tons of nuts totaling USD 461.4 million.
Thus, over the previous five years (2020-2024), the volume of average annual walnut exports brought about USD 92.2 million to the currency treasury of Ukraine annually (according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine), while last year (2025) walnut exports decreased by 90% to USD 9.2 million.
The expert noted that the export of shelled walnuts, the main commodity item in nut exports, decreased by 97% in 2025 compared to 2024, and the export of walnuts in the shell decreased by 76%.
New powerful nut players are growing on the world market - China, Chile, and Ukraine is losing its global nut status.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, in 2023, compared to 2022, walnut exports increased by 21% to 31,000 tons, and in monetary terms, it decreased by 4% to USD 77 million.
