The Ukrainian Embassy in Washington has received an official demarche from the US Department of State in connection with the strikes on the russian port of Novorossiysk, Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Olha Stefanishyna said.
She made the remarks in a comment to CNN.
According to the diplomat, the appeal stated that the attacks had affected certain American investments in Kazakhstan.
"And we heard from the Department of State that we should refrain from, you know, attacks on American interests," she said.
Stefanishyna clarified that the issue was specifically about US economic interests, which were affected by the strikes on the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. She stressed that the American side did not appeal to Kyiv to stop the strikes on russia's military or energy infrastructure.
"This was due precisely to the fact that American economic interests were violated there. We took this into account," the Ambassador said.
The demarche also noted that the United States does not currently have the same amount of economic interests in Ukraine as in Kazakhstan.
"I am very, very sorry that in 35 years of Ukraine's independence, having so many opportunities, we have not reached a situation where we could do the same," Stefanishyna added.
What is known about strikes on oil terminals in Novorossiysk
On the night of November 14, 2025, the Ukrainian military struck the oil terminal of the Novorossiysk seaport in the Krasnodar Krai of russia. As a result of the attack, oil tankers at the berths, pipelines and pumping stations were damaged.
Kazakhstan then protested to Ukraine, calling the strike on the consortium's infrastructure in the Novorossiysk port the third "act of aggression" against a civilian object.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine responded by stating that the Ukrainian military is acting in response to russian attacks and is not directing actions against Kazakhstan.
