The fighting in Ukraine has changed so much that even areas tens of kilometers away from the front can no longer be considered relatively safe. According to the Financial Times, the new reality of war has affected tactics, logistics and the very understanding of the concept of the rear.
Drones and the "kill zone"
According to the publication, activity in the open area near the front can be deadly. Drones and helicopters are constantly flying in the air, and the territories are covered with fiber-optic communication lines, which are used to control equipment and drones.
The military is forced to additionally reinforce its vehicles, including pickup trucks with metal structures to protect them from top-down attacks. In frontline cities such as Kherson, special nets are being stretched over roads and buildings to reduce the risk of air attacks.
The head of the Come Back Alive Foundation, Taras Chmut, called the area near the frontline a "kill zone." "Warfare had changed in a “radical way”. And every month the kill zone grows in size. For Europeans, it is still difficult to understand."
Movement - mostly at night
In the areas near the contact line, traffic has almost stopped during the day. Soldiers are moving to their positions mostly at night, using thermal coats or waiting for thick fog. The supply of food and equipment is increasingly carried out by drones, and robotic systems are sometimes used to evacuate the wounded.
FPV drones are changing the rules of the game
The key role in the new phase of warfare is played by FPV drones, which are able to accurately hit vehicles and equipment. Because of this, conventional cars have practically disappeared from dangerous areas.
Iryna Rybakova, a representative of the 93rd separate mechanized brigade "Kholodnyi Yar," noted that in the area closest to the front, transport is hardly used.
To protect the roads, they create a kind of tunnels made of nets, but even this does not guarantee complete safety.
Technological confrontation
The frontline is increasingly resembling a testing ground for the latest technologies. Electronic warfare means are being actively used to jam the control signals of drones. In response, russian forces are using drones on long fiber-optic cables to bypass radio interference.
Traditional armored columns have all but disappeared. Instead, the military is relying on mobile teams, improvised protective equipment, and unconventional means of transportation, including motorcycles, buggies, and even horses.
Thus, the publication notes, the war in Ukraine has evolved into a high-tech confrontation, where safe zones are becoming less and less.
Recall that the country that was supposed to be destroyed in a week has been at war for 1.400 days: today is the fourth anniversary of the russian attack on Ukraine.
