In the town of Storozhynets, a man threw a live grenade at a police car last night, seriously injuring a 23-year-old police officer, who is now in hospital. It was reported by the police of the Chernivtsi Region.
The incident occurred on February 19 at 10:50 p.m.
"While responding to the call, an unknown person threw a live grenade towards a police car, near which there were two law enforcement officers, and fled the scene," the statement said.
A 23-year-old police officer of the response sector is in hospital in serious condition. a 31-year-old police driver of the Security Police Department received light injuries, his life is not in danger.
After the attack, a special police operation was launched in the region - the attacker was quickly identified and detained the same night. The attacker was a 48-year-old resident of Storozhynets, a former serviceman.
"We used all the necessary forces and means to quickly identify and detain the attacker. During the detention, he resisted law enforcement officers with an explosive object in his hands and had several more pieces of ammunition. Attempting to kill police officers is a particularly serious crime. The response will be tough and principled. No one will escape responsibility," emphasized Viktor Nechytailo, Head of the Chernivtsi Regional Police.
An urgent search was also conducted at the suspect's place of residence. The police seized more weapons and ammunition.
The pre-trial investigation is being carried out under Art. 348 (attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer) and Art. 263 (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
