The occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP has been operating from only one external power line for more than a week after the failure of the backup line Ferosplavna-1. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has announced this, Reuters reports.
According to him, the line was disconnected on February 10, "reportedly as a result of military activity," which is why Europe's largest nuclear power plant now depends exclusively on the Dniprovska power line. The facility needs the external power supply to cool nuclear material and prevent a reactor core meltdown.
Grossi emphasized that the agency's observers tried to assess the situation independently, but faced restrictions from the occupation authorities.
"IAEA monitors permanently assigned to Zaporizhzhia were trying to obtain information on the damage, but security restrictions prevented them from gaining access to the plant's switchyard," he said.
The absence of backup power and the non-admission of inspectors to critical components of the plant increase the risks to nuclear safety of the facility.
As a reminder, Energoatom opposed the idea of joint operation of the occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP with the russian side, calling such a scenario unrealistic to implement.
