In the near future, the Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive a significant number of AIM missiles, which effectively destroy enemy cruise missiles, helicopters and drones. It was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
These missiles have been in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine for several years and are used both from F-16 fighters and NASAMS ground-based air defense systems. The main advantage of this series of missiles is the "fire and forget" principle and high resistance to electronic warfare.
What are these missiles?
Three main modifications of these missiles are actively used at the front, each of which has its own purpose. The smallest of them, the AIM-9 Sidewinder, weighs about 90 kg and, thanks to infrared guidance, effectively hits targets in close combat at a distance of up to 35 km. The medium-sized AIM-120 AMRAAM missile is equipped with its own radar, which allows it to destroy objects beyond line of sight at a distance of up to 75 km, and its upgraded versions can reach the enemy even at a distance of 180 km. The largest in the series is the AIM-7 Sparrow, which, thanks to its powerful high-explosive fragmentation unit and a speed of almost 5,000 km/h, successfully intercepts Shahed-234 jet drones and cruise missiles.
We would like to remind you that the UK is developing a new hypersonic Nightfall missile system, which is planned to be transferred to Ukraine.
