Two startups offer to create digital doppelgangers after death - you can communicate with them

The Mindbank.ai and Afterlife.ai services offer to create interactive digital copies of a person who has died. These "doppelgangers" will be able to communicate with relatives based on recorded voices, memories and personal stories.

This is reported by the Singularity Hub publication.

The platforms allow users to save audio recordings, texts and other materials during their lifetime, which are used by artificial intelligence to reproduce the manner of communication and personality traits. Such digital profiles are positioned as a way to preserve the memory of a person in an interactive format.

The MindBank application offers to answer questions every day and record a voice in order to make a digital copy of a person in the future. The algorithm analyzes speech, emotional states and personality traits, forming a long-term array of information about the user. According to the plan, such a model will allow you to reproduce changes in mood and character.

Developers position such tools as part of the process of experiencing loss: revisiting memories is an element of the therapeutic cycle and can help people cope with grief.

At the same time, most countries do not have clearly defined norms that regulate the ownership of a person's voice, image or personal data after death. It is also unclear what will happen to the data if the company closes or is bought by another company.

Recall that in the first season of the science fiction series Black Mirror there is a similar episode. According to the plot, after the death of her partner, a woman orders a service that creates a chatbot based on his messages and digital data, and later a physical copy that imitates his personality.

In April 2025, the seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror was released on Netflix. It consists of 6 episodes, one of which is a continuation of the story of "USS Callister".
