Austrian ski jumper Daniel Tschofenig has been disqualified from the Olympics after his shoes were four millimetres too big, the BBC reported.
The 23-year-old Tschofenig, the reigning 2025 World Cup champion, scored 137.7 points on his first attempt and comfortably qualified for the final. After checking his equipment, the judges found a breach of the rules and immediately disqualified the athlete.
"I used new shoes in training, which I wasn't very happy with, but I kept them. Unfortunately, I was naive and didn't measure them. It was extremely stupid of me, it was just a lot of stress. But rules are rules," Tschofenig said.
After his suspension, the Slovak Hektor Kapustik was given the opportunity to compete in the final.
The gold medal in the large hill competition was won by Slovenian Domen Prevc. Silver went to Japan's Ren Nikaido, and bronze went to Poland's Kacper Tomasiak.
As a reminder, American luger Sophia Kirkby, a three-time world championship medalist, said that she celebrated Valentine's Day with a fan who wrote to her on social media and flew from the UK to Milan specifically to see her.
