Former Ukrainian football player Serhii Petrov was killed in Donetsk region while serving in the russian army. It was reported by the so-called "Football Federation of Yevpatoria", created by the russian occupation regime in Crimea.
According to available information, the 28-year-old native of Crimea was killed by the Ukrainian military near Pokrovsk. In June 2025, he voluntarily joined the russian armed forces after leaving Ukraine.
Petrov began his career at Volyn Lutsk, then played for Zirka Kropyvnytskyi, Lviv FC, Rukh Lviv, Metalist 1925, and Ahrobiznes. He played 51 matches in the Ukrainian championship and scored 4 goals. He also played in Uzbekistan. After returning to the occupied Crimea, he kept fit in the Tavria-Energo team created by the russians.
He played once for the U-21 national team of Ukraine - in a match against Belarus in 2016.
"The Armed Forces of Ukraine eliminated the former Volyn striker Serhii Petrov. At one time he played for the Ukrainian youth team. The Crimean footballer, whom the legendary Vitalii Kvartsianyi considered a super talent, signed a contract with the mordor and went to fight against his country," commented football commentator Roman Bebekh.
Bebekh also said that the football system should pay more attention to the formation of the worldview and education of young athletes, not just sports results, and gave examples of players who have publicly taken a pro-Ukrainian position.
Earlier it was reported that the character of the meme "either you forgot, or you didn't know," who had joined the russian occupation forces, was liquidated in Ukraine.
