A ceasefire in Ukraine will increase the risk of an attack by the aggressor country of russia on the eastern NATO countries. While Ukraine is defending Europe, russian troops are busy, which reduces the threat. This was stated by Munich Security Conference chairman Wolfgang Ischinger in an interview with Tagesspiegel.
The russian threat on NATO's eastern flank may increase after the ceasefire in Ukraine, Ischinger said. According to him, while Ukraine is defending Europe, the danger is not so great, and the russian army is losing thousands of soldiers every week.
"As soon as a ceasefire is declared in Ukraine, the situation changes. Then putin will be able to continue rearmament peacefully, and the threat to NATO countries on the eastern flank will intensify," said the former German ambassador to the United States.
Ischinger stressed that he wants to stop the deaths of Ukrainians, but Ukraine is now defending Europe, not just its territory. In his opinion, if the ceasefire is not accompanied by a massive restriction of russia's military presence in the western districts, then the threat will be greater for the Germans: "So a simple ceasefire is by no means a reason to relax," Ischinger emphasized.
As Ukrainian News Agency earlier reported, on January 13, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that the aggressor country of russia is suffering huge military losses in Ukraine, losing 20 to 25 thousand people killed every month.
