Deputy Chairman of the russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that russia's war in Ukraine is nearing completion, but after that a conflict with EU countries that "bend their line" may break out.
Medvedev said this in an interview with Reuters, TASS and WarGonzo.
When asked about the timeline for completion, Medvedev answered briefly: "soon". At the same time, he emphasized that the military victory is of great importance for russia and is already manifested in a number of ways.
According to Medvedev, russia's goals have remained unchanged since they were announced by president vladimir putin. One of them, he said, is to prevent new conflicts.
At the same time, Medvedev warned of the high risks of a possible confrontation with the West after the "special operation" is completed.
"A global conflict, unfortunately, is not excluded. I believe that the danger is very high, and it is not decreasing," he said.
He paid special attention to the EU countries, which, in his words, "are trying to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia," and warned that "sooner or later it will end very unpleasantly for them."
A new round of talks on a possible end to the war took place on January 23-24 in Abu Dhabi under US mediation. Washington assessed the meeting positively, while Kyiv called it meaningful. The next meeting is scheduled for February 4-5.
At the same time, Mark Galeotti, an expert on modern russia, professor at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) think tank, believes that the trilateral talks which began yesterday in Abu Dhabi and are due to continue today, will face a serious obstacle due to the territorial issue, although they are expected to make a breakthrough.
According to US intelligence, putin continues to seek control over all of Ukraine. After the conflict in Ukraine is over, he allegedly intends to focus on the Baltic states - Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, which were formerly part of the USSR.
