New materials released by the US Department of Justice in the case of American financier Jeffrey Epstein characterize him as vladimir putin's "wealth manager."

The Agentstvo news agency drew attention to this.

The relevant wording is contained in the report of the Federal Bureau of Investigation dated November 27, 2017, prepared on the basis of testimony from a confidential source. The same document states that Epstein provided "similar services" to former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. In the new collection of materials, putin's name is mentioned 1,055 times, and the word "Russia" is mentioned 5,876 times.

A separate set of documents includes e-mail correspondence in which the financier discussed possible contacts with putin. In particular, in October 2010, one of Epstein's letters asked whether putin had been on his yacht. In November of the same year, when applying for a russian visa, Epstein wrote: "I have a friend of Putin's, should I ask him?" In August 2011, in a message to a businessman in the UAE, he said that putin might be coming to the United States, and he would prefer to meet him there.

Epstein had the most intense correspondence on this topic with former Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland. In May 2013, he reported that putin was "invited to a dinner in Paris with Bill Gates." In January 2014, Epstein asked Jagland to "explain to Putin" that russia needed "a more advanced version of bitcoin." In October 2017, he again asked to discuss digital currencies with Putin, and in June 2018, he wrote that he "would very much like to meet with Putin" and was ready to contact russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

The published materials do not specify whether Jeffrey Epstein eventually met with vladimir putin

We would like to remind you that the convicted American financier Jeffrey Epstein maintained contacts with russian special services and systematically collected dirt on famous people.

What is known about the Epstein case

Jeffrey Epstein was first arrested in 2008 for having sex with minors and organizing prostitution. After 13 months in jail, he cut a deal with prosecutors and was released. In 2019, he faced new human trafficking charges; on July 7, he was re-arrested, and on August 10, Epstein committed suicide in prison. The FBI found thousands of names of famous people in his notebook, including Tony Blair, Mick Jagger, Richard Branson, and Donald Trump, with whom Epstein was friends and attended parties together.

One of the documents stated, that almost a month before Donald Trump met with vladimir putin in Helsinki in 2018, Jeffrey Epstein tried to convey a message to the russian leadership: if you want to understand Trump, talk to me. This is evidenced by emails released by the US Congress on Wednesday.

Prior to that, American lawmakers stated that they had received a copy of a book with birthday cards from the notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Among them is a 2003 card with a drawing of a naked woman, signed with the name of the current US President Donald Trump.

In December 2025, Democratic members of the US House of Representatives Oversight Committee posted a new collection of photos, seized from the estate of financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sexual offenses. Among the published materials is an image of a Ukrainian passport belonging to a woman.

At the same time, a US court ordered the publication of the names of more than 170 people from Epstein's inner circle. The Epstein files contain dozens of references to Ukraine and Ukrainian politicians Oleksandr Vilkul and Leonid Kuchma.
