Denmark was ready to engage in an armed struggle with the United States if the US army attempted to invade the island of Greenland. It was reported by the Danish newspaper DR with reference to its own sources.
According to the newspaper, last week the Danish army was ordered to strengthen the ability to implement the Greenland defense plan as soon as possible. Shortly afterward, the world could see military and civilian aircraft begin to systematically transport soldiers and military equipment to the island.
According to the order, the operation was that the Danish army had to strengthen its presence in Greenland as soon as possible to demonstrate its readiness and ability to defend the sovereignty of the kingdom.
The order contained a reference to a basic plan for the defense of the island, which could be used if necessary. The document also stated that Danish soldiers had been sent to Germany, equipped with live ammunition.
DR notes that the political will to engage in an armed struggle with the United States existed not only on the part of the government, but also on the part of most opposition parties. Neither the former nor the latter thought it likely that Washington would launch a military strike on Greenland. But at the time, there was a possibility that US President Donald Trump did not want to rule out.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, on January 21, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, US President Trump publicly ruled out a military takeover of Greenland. At the same time, he called for negotiations on the purchase of the island to begin as soon as possible.
Trump later said that the US and NATO have formed the basis for a future agreement on Greenland. He also changed his mind about imposing tariffs against allies.
