About 8.5 gigawatts (GW) of electricity generation capacity has been damaged over the past three months as a result of strikes by the aggressor country of russia. The Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture Oleksii Soboliev made the statement at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
He said that since October 2025, the aggressor country has been shelling electricity generation facilities. The strikes damaged about 8.5 GW of generation capacity, including thermal and hydroelectric power plants.
Power engineers are making every effort to eliminate the consequences of the strikes and repair the damage. However, the occupiers' strikes are systematic, so the restored facilities are again targeted.
The current situation in Ukraine's energy system has led to a shortage of electricity. To compensate for it, Kyiv has resorted to record electricity imports, which amount to 1.9 GW.
Soboliev noted that the situation is complicated by weather conditions. This winter has become the coldest in the last few years.
"We need to go through this most difficult part of the winter. Our equipment stocks are almost exhausted. The urgent needs amount to USD 1 billion - these are generating capacities, mobile substations, backup systems and other equipment," the minister said.
As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, after a massive air attack carried out by the russian federation on the night of January 20, a special schedule of emergency blackouts was introduced in the Chernihiv Region. As of noon, almost 90% of consumers had no electricity.
We also wrote that due to the russian attack, the Chornobyl nuclear power plant was left without external power. Power lines at other Ukrainian NPPs were also damaged.
