The Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant was connected to the Unified Energy System of Ukraine. Earlier today, January 20, the external power supply to the plant was terminated due to a massive attack by the aggressor country, the russian federation.
This is evidenced by a message on the official Telegram channel of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
The department said that thanks to the efforts of energy workers, the State Specialized Enterprise "Chornobyl NPP" was able to be connected to the energy system. All facilities, including the New Safe Confinement and spent nuclear fuel storage facilities, have access to electricity.
"The radiation background at the industrial site and in the exclusion zone does not exceed control levels. The plant is provided with the necessary fuel reserves and serviceable backup power sources in case of repeated attacks," the message says.
The ministry noted that despite the current situation, there is no threat to the population or the environment at this time. Monitoring of the radiation background and other indicators continues in an intensified mode.
As Ukrainian News Agency reported, earlier today the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated that the Chornobyl NPP was left without external power supply as a result of a massive attack by the aggressor country, the russian federation.
Shortly before this, the Minister of Energy of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, stated that the russians may attack energy facilities that are involved in servicing Ukrainian nuclear power plants.
