Law on multiple citizenship comes into force

On January 16, a law that introduces the institution of multiple citizenship (nationality) in Ukraine came into force.

This is stated in a message from the Verkhovna Rada on the Telegram channel, the Ukrainian News agency reports.

According to this law, Ukrainians can obtain citizenship of states, the list of which is determined by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Citizens of these countries will also be able to acquire Ukrainian citizenship by meeting general requirements and passing appropriate exams.

For foreigners who are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine under a contract, one year of service during martial law is enough to qualify for citizenship.

Relatives of servicemen who were killed or serve to defend Ukraine will be able to obtain citizenship in a simplified manner.

As the Ukrainian News agency earlier reported, the law on multiple citizenship, initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on June 18, comes into force six months from the date of its publication in the official parliamentary publication Holos Ukrainy [Voice of Ukraine] on July 16, - January 16, 2026.

On November 5, 2025, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the list of states whose citizens acquire Ukrainian citizenship in a simplified manner.

In particular, simplified acquisition of Ukrainian citizenship is provided for citizens of Canada, Germany, Poland, the US, and the Czech Republic.

According to Article 4 of the Constitution, there is a single citizenship in Ukraine, the grounds for acquiring and terminating Ukrainian citizenship are determined by law.
